Just not the way it works at all and it wouldn't be profitable if it did. Actually, that happens every now and again where you feel more like you're playing against yourself than an opponent.Ī lot of people felt like this was going to be a game where investing $10 could make you instantly competitive and that all the decks would be balanced against each other. Rush deck versus rush deck feels like you're playing a single player game. Some games can feel like they're not very interactive. I think the two best examples are Heart of the Forest as a card in AoA and Brobnar in World's Collide. Some of the new sets introduce cards that suck to play against or have houses that are impressively weaker than they used to be. I'm not actually sure that's the biggest drawback, but it can be annoying to get a deck with three of a mostly useless common in two different houses. but you have to play them because they're built into the decks. Richard Garfield said one of the things that started to hurt him about Magic was that there were tons of cards that never got played because they weren't as good as others. That can be frustrating but it's something you get used to. A lot of players from other card games come to KeyForge and think board state matters or that there's an advantage in having a massive board other than being able to reap. The only thing that matters in the game is aember. Maybe you can get better at playing them but they're still going to lose more than win. There's gonna be a lot of guys who try to claim any deck is good as long as you "learn" it. ![]() There are WIDE power differences in decks and card combinations (sometimes). MM really just blows the lid off Keyforge, delivering on a lot of what the game attempted previously. Capture feels particularly good in MM too, after being a relatively weak mechanic in every prior release. Even the stuff that people regard as weak from that set, chiefly Sanctum and Untamed, are regularly impressive, often due to enhancements. I love MM in particular for the sheer level of viability enhancements can bring to otherwise unremarkable decks. So on one hand a huge portion of the WC product is dead out of the gates, and then the stuff that is good, isn't stuff I find entertaining to play because it's often so similar.ĬOTA and MM offer a large variety of playable decks by comparison, and the most powerful decks are all over the place. On top of that, some of the great decks I've seen from WC are especially bad due to Infurnace, and a lot of basic functions like board wipe feel slow in WC (design decisions like Gateway being removed in favor of Harbinger, Lights Out replaced by Kymoor Eclipse, etc). ![]() From there, the majority of the decks that are good in my experience, are some mix of Dis and Logos, with very same-y Saurian, Shadows, or Star Alliance. They have previously got there in the end, but some required some fairly detailed FAQ writing.Īs I said, I love the game, and at around 30 minutes a play and £7 a deck, I'm fine with these limitations myself! Most stem from the RNG decks, which adds enough variation and complexity to more than offset these downsides.īuying sealed WC is out of the question for me, since almost any deck with Brobnar in it is a dud. There have been, and no doubt will be again, some weird interactions between card effects that FFG haven't seemed to know how to resolve. Some decks may be one-trick ponies, with very straightforward strategies. If you want to try out specific cards, you may never see them if you do, they may be in a deck that doesn't really show them off. Its hard to tell for a few plays which situation you are in. Whilst I've found most decks are pretty balanced, some decks may not be balanced against each other - some may be generally stronger or weaker, and some may hard-counter others with no warning. I know I've played a few 0-3 blowouts (on both sides) where one player really couldn't do anything whilst the other drew everything they needed. ![]() Like any card game, some games are just going to be decided by RNG. I love the game and have been playing since launch. ![]() ![]() ![]() This brings me, naturally, to what players will be doing in that world - constantly shooting enemies. So, when the campaign opens with a real-time image of thousands of soldiers fighting an endless army of monstrosities, it sells the idea that everything is at stake and pulls the player right into the world. In a war between worlds, everyone is a soldier. Through audio logs, radio broadcasts, and conversations with resistance fighters, Serious Sam 4 paints a picture of a planet teetering on the edge of destruction, populated by regular people who have been plucked from their mundane lives and forced to fight. Most importantly, they give players a window into how the people of Earth are reacting to Mental’s invasion. In SS4, the writers take the time to humanize Sam’s team and add a little depth to Sam himself. It succeeded as a launchpad for great action mechanics, but was otherwise mediocre. In Serious Sam and its sequels, players were told that Mental had blown up the Earth and it was Sam’s job to make him pay, but there’s no reason for the player to get emotionally involved in that quest. Yes, the vast majority of the gameplay is non-stop action, but there’s an extremely well-written action-comedy framework holding it all in place and making the experience more meaningful by its inclusion. Thanks in large part to the amazing work done by the indie developers who toiled for years exploring the idea of what a Serious Sam game could be, SS4 is the first truly story-driven title in the series. Players control Sam as he leads a rag-tag group of soldiers through action setpieces and boss battles that climax with a truly enormous battle. Moving the plot even further back in time, Serious Sam 4 is an FPS set entirely in the future during the war against an evil alien overlord named Mental who’s hellbent on dominating the universe by any means necessary. WTF Flaming Rocket Powered Chainsaw Launcher.Īfter a misstep with Serious Sam 3: BFE and a decade of VR remakes and indie titles, Croteam has finally found its footing with Serious Sam 4 - the best in the mainline series. If you want to see who among your friends is the better Sam, you'll have to wait for either a multiplayer update that could restore competitive play … or just wait for the next Serious Sam game and hope for the best.LOW A 500-square-kilometer level with no map. This time around, multiplayer is limited strictly to four player co-op campaign play. Another surprise is the game's multiplayer options, or rather the lack thereof. That doesn't make things difficult, but instead just makes it frustrating. It's not so much that the creatures are difficult, but there's just so many of them. The only thing that makes it stand out, and the reason for the hefty system requirements, is the sheer number of enemies that can be on the screen at a given time. Considering how much the game pushes hardware, it's surprising that it doesn't look better. It's a bit like that "cool kid" showing up at the class reunion still wearing his sunglasses and letterman jacket. The jokes and the attitude haven't changed much in twenty years and it shows. The story isn't the way Serious Sam 4 feels trapped in time. It's almost as if the game assumes players have just forgotten whatever has happened before, which, to be fair, is entirely possible. Still, it doesn't really feel connected to the rest of the series. In fact, it's pretty much just a wafer-thin way to point players in the direction of enemies and set them loose on the invading hordes. ![]() Of course, the series has never been one known for its deep plot or engaging story. This is an awkward prequel-ish tale, taking place somewhere between the second and third games. Serious Sam 4 is the first new entry in the main series in a while, and yet it's still feels sort of trapped in time. Serious Sam has shot, blown up, and bludgeoned his place in first-person shooter history for nearly two decades, but the main series has been left on the shelf for almost half that time. ![]() ![]() ![]() Nature Place doesn't expect volume to be affected, but it hopes to gain more control over pricing. ![]() But I know exactly what Ray Charles feels, too," Royal once said, and by the beginning of the new century, a host of reissues of Royal's work testified to his status as a vocal craftsman whose success transcended genre." Yo-Yo" is a song written by Joe South and first released as a single by Billy Joe Royal in 1966, peaking at #117 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and #28 in Canada. Royal launched a comeback with the 1998 album Stay Close to Home on the Intersound label, following up with the independent release Now and Then, Then and Now in 2001. He continued to have minor hits into 1992 and toured into the 2000s. By 1990, Royal's style of pop-inflected country had been replaced by neo-traditional honky tonk at the top of the charts, and his popularity began to decline. Over the next two years he had a string of Top 40 hits, breaking into the Top Ten in late 1987 once again with "I'll Pin a Note on Your Pillow." In 1989, Royal released the album Tell It Like Is the title cut, a remake of the venerable soul standard, became his biggest hit, peaking at number two, while the album itself stayed in the Top 15 for over a year. The single became a hit and reached the country Top Ten in early 1986. In 1984, he broke through when he recorded the Gary Burr composition "Burned Like a Rocket" it was picked up by the Atlantic label, which signed Royal to a contract. The wrong-side-of-the-tracks theme of "Down in the Boondocks" was a familiar one to country audiences, and during the early '80s Royal worked on establishing himself as a country artist. ![]() In 1978, he recorded a cover of "Under the Boardwalk" and scored a minor hit. He also did a bit of acting on television, in feature films, and in commercials. Following its success, Royal had a string of lesser hits, including the Top 40 pop singles "I Knew You When," "I've Got to Be Somebody," and "Cherry Hill Park." By the end of the decade, Royal's star waned, and he became a regular performer in Las Vegas and around Lake Tahoe. The song became Royal's breakthrough single, reaching number nine on the pop charts and briefly making the vocalist into a teen idol. The demo ended up at Columbia, and the label signed Royal to a six-year deal. Royal flew from Cincinnati (where he was working at the time) to Atlanta and cut "Down in the Boondocks," whose churchy echo resulted from the use during recording of a large septic tank that had been dragged into the studio. Royal and South roomed together for a time, and two or three years later South contacted him with a song he wanted Royal to sing as a demo, in the hope that Gene Pitney would record it. In 1962, he recorded an independent single that went unnoticed. Performing at a nightclub that also booked Sam Cooke and other African-American stars, Royal observed their vocal moves and began to practice them on his own time. He also spent time in Savannah, where he was influenced by African-American vocal styles and began to develop his distinctive vocal sound. Royal had his own rock & roll band in high school and was regularly singing around Atlanta by the age of 16. ![]() He learned to play steel guitar and joined the Georgia Jubilee in Atlanta at 14, performing with Joe South, Jerry Reed, and Ray Stevens, among several other artists. Royal was born into a family of musical entertainers in Valdosta, Georgia, and made his debut on his uncle's radio show at the age of 11. Although he never had another hit as successful as "Down in the Boondocks," he racked up about 15 singles that hit the country charts over the course of the 1980s.
